Clear Penetrating vs. Colour Grout Sealing: Which is Right for Your Floor?
Sealing your grout is the single most important step in protecting tile installations. But should you opt for an invisible clear penetrating sealer or a durable colour restoration sealer? Here is how to decide.
1. What is Clear Penetrating Grout Sealer?
Clear penetrating sealers are sub-surface treatments composed of microscopic fluorochemical particles. When applied, they soak deep into the cement matrix, lining the pore walls without clogging them. They do not alter the texture, natural shade, or sheen of the grout. Explore our professional grout sealing options for new or undamaged floors.
2. What is Grout Colour Sealing?
Grout colour sealing is an advanced urethane-acrylic topical restoration coating. It bonds permanently to existing grout lines, filling surface voids and imparting a completely uniform, fresh colour (available in dozens of modern shades from light white to charcoal). It is 100% waterproof and eliminates blotchy discoloration.
3. Direct Comparison: Which Should You Choose?
Choose clear sealer if your grout is new, clean, and has an attractive, consistent shade that you want to preserve invisibly. Choose colour sealing if your grout has suffered permanent dye stains, uneven fading, or if you want to modernize an outdated beige/brown bathroom to crisp contemporary off-white or slate grey.
4. Maintenance and Lifespan
Both options dramatically reduce cleaning effort. Spills bead on top of the grout line like water on a freshly waxed car, allowing you to wipe up grease, red wine, and coffee with a simple damp cloth.
